The Evanston Public Library and the Evanston History Center present Dr. Michael Kramer, who will give a lecture on the counterculture of the late 1960s.
The Evanston Public Library and the Evanston History Center are collaborating on a series of events commemorating 1968 in conjunction with EHC's exhibit, "Seasons of Change."
Dr. Kramer works at the intersection of historical scholarship, cultural criticism, the arts, and digital technology. He teaches at Middlebury College, where he is Acting Director of the Digital Liberal Arts Initiative. He is the author of The Republic of Rock: Music and Citizenship in the Sixties Counterculture (Oxford University Press, 2013; paperback, 2017).
His lecture will focus on the "largely forgotten strike in the spring of 1968, when hippie disc jockeys and engineers at KMPX-FM, the first underground rock radio station in the United States, walked off the job. The KMPXers wanted increased pay and better equipment. They also wanted greater “artistic freedom,” as one of their fliers demanded, and opportunities to advance “the living idea of a loving group of people,” as another put it."

This lecture will be in the Falcon Room on the 3rd floor of the Main Library.
