Moderated panel discussion on local journalism, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, North Shore Village and the library.
In many communities the daily or weekly local newspaper, delivered to your door, is only a memory. And there is growing evidence that the loss of local media “watchdogs” has a negative impact on government accountability and civic engagement.
In Evanston, we are fortunate to have several news outlets that cover local issues and events. But can they cover all the news? How do they decide what and whom to cover? How do financial and staffing constraints impact coverage? What can readers do to support the sustainability of local news media?
Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at local news coverage. The evening will include Q & A with the audience.
Featuring: Mary Helt Gavin, Publisher & Manager, Evanston RoundTable; Alan Perez, Editor-in-Chief, Daily Northwestern; Bill Smith, Publisher, Evanston Now.
Moderator: Helen Gagel
