A brief but wide-ranging look at the history, society, and religion of the Aztecs which seeks to break with received notions and take a fresh look at this remarkable civilization.
The author is Professor of the Study of Latin America at Harvard. This brief introduction to the Aztecs seeks to correct the dominant Western narrative on this civilization by looking not only at military successes and the well-known (gruesome) ritual practices, but also language, philosophy, religion, and art. What becomes clear is that modern Mexico is as much a continuation of Aztec and other pre-Columbian cultures as it is a Spanish colonial creation. There is both continuity and rupture. Carrasco’s book has been celebrated by anthropologists and historians in both the US and Mexico.
