Since September 2020, the Good Trouble Sewing Circle has met every other Wednesday at lunchtime to create art-activism together and support Black Lives Matter activism work.
Convened by local artist and clinical psychologist Melissa Blount, the group is a space to support the Black Lives Matter Movement and create a virtual Beloved Community.
Through this art-based activism community came together to celebrate Breonna Taylor’s life and her love of double Dutch. Her life was celebrated in the local double dutch tournament “Jump Off for Breonna”.
The first embroidery project was inspired by the resonant words of Representative John Lewis:
"Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."
The Good Trouble Sewing Circle encourages the visitors of this exhibit to be inspired by John Lewis’ words and discover what Good Trouble is needed within in your own circles the Evanston community, and the country at large.
