The significance of senbazuru ("thousand cranes") is featured in a story based on the life of Sadako Sasaki. Sadako was a victim of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when she was 2 years old. A friend of hers told her about the legend of the cranes. She set a goal of folding 1,000 cranes which would grant the folder a wish. Since then, senbazuru has been recognized as a synonym of "wish for recovery" or "wish for peace".
