Do you want to share the skill of sewing with someone of an older or younger generation? We will provide all the materials necessary. You bring your sewing machine SKILLS and your loved one!
Do you want to share the joy of sewing with someone you love (friend, family, neighbor... you choose!)? Maybe it is important for you to share your skills with younger generations? Or you just want to share a good time with a friend while you teach them how to use a sewing machine? Come along and make your own tote bag (one per group of 2 participants) using our sewing machines, fabric and supplies. You can bring your own ornaments such as buttons, ribbons and other items to further customize your project.
Basic machine sewing skills are necessary from at least one of the participants
With your help and that of a library staff sewing expert, your companion will learn to align and pin fabric, the basics of operating a sewing machine, and sewing concepts relating to hiding seams and reinforcing stitching.
REGISTER YOURSELF TO ATTEND WITH ONE OTHER PERSON (no need for them to register, too)
Why is this a Climate Action Program?
CAP's are presentations, workshops and other events that promote awareness over the need to take action in order to reduce our carbon footprint. We aim to make Climate Action accessible and engaging to everybody by providing fun programs that spark curiosity and a desire to take better care of ourselves and our planet.
Learning and teaching how to sew one's own garments and textiles is not only essential to many cultures and a money-saving skill, but also a way of strengthening community and/or family bonds by passing skills from one generation to the next. Making our own belongings helps us regain control over the way things are made as well as over the impact -or lack thereof- of our decisions on other people and planet.
The City of Evanston is committed to promoting a Citywide culture of accessibility and inclusivity. To request an accommodation for a program, service, or activity, please call 847-866-2919 to make an ADA service request or fill out a request form online.
