Drop in to join artist Holly Greenberg in crafting bird replicas to represent every bird killed in a window crash in Chicago and Simpli-Sci to learn about bird science and make hummingbird feeders!
About the Bird Collisions Art Project:
Working with data gathered from the Chicago Bird Collision Monitors and The Field Museum, artist Holly Greenberg is creating replicas of every bird killed in a window crash in Chicago in 2023 (the deadliest year on record). The end result will be a monumental art installation of all the birds. The location and date of the art installation is to be determined.
By using upcycled, donated fabrics that would otherwise be destined for the landfill, Holly is inviting community members to help her make all 10,839 birds. Each bird replica is tagged with the species, date, artist, etc. Workshop participants will also learn how to make their windows safe for birds and will be shown a variety of methods for treating windows.

Learning About Humming Birds with Simpli-Sci
Like humming birds? Want to know how they work and what we can do to support them? Come learn all about it from Simpli-Sci! Simpli-Sci is a non-profit running out of The Garage at Northwestern University. It is a start-up publication transforming the way science is communicated breaking down some of the barriers that prevent people from understanding scientific discovery and ongoing research.
Through the use of upcycled materials we will make our own hummingbird feeders that you can hang in the Robert Crown reading garden or take home!

About the artist:
As a sustainable artist, Holly Greenberg uses invasive plants, donated fabric scraps and discarded waste materials in her large-scale, eco-conscious installations. Integral to her practice is the civic engagement component in which citizens can lend a hand in the production of the work while learning about environmental initiatives such as habitat restoration through native gardening, and bird safe building practices. She is a professor of art at Syracuse University where she teaches courses in printmaking, drawing and sustainable arts practices.
