Celebrate this 7 day holiday which honors African heritage and promotes community centered principles! Pick up a craft kit, check out books, and attend City of Evanston's virtual Kwanzaa celebration!
Habari gani? What's the news?
Starting December 13, Zawadi* Craft Kits can be picked-up at the Main and Robert Crown Library locations, while supplies last. Each child may choose from one of three craft kits to take home- A Mkeka mat, a paper bead bracelet or stamps to create your own Adinkra printing! Color, cut, glue and stamp your way to a creative Kwanzaa*! The craft kits are best for children aged 5 and up, and are available to Evanston children and/or District 65 students.
And while you're at the library, consider checking out a book about Kwanzaa from our Celebrating Kwanzaa Booklist!
Then on December 26th, the first day of Kwanzaa, come to Fountain Square (or tune in virtually) for a Kwanzaa Kinara Lighting at 12pm, followed by a City of Evanston (virtual) Kwanzaa Celebration hosted by Dear Evanston via Facebook, from 2-4 pm, presented by Fleetwood Jourdain Theatre and Evanston Public Library.
*Kwanzaa- First fruits of the harvest (Swahili).
*Zawadi- Kwanzaa gifts made by hand (Swahili).
