Lorraine Hairston Morton was an Educator, an Alderman, and Evanston's first African American Mayor.
Lorraine Hairston Morton was an Educator, an Alderman, and Evanston's first African American Mayor. Lorraine served the Evanston community for over 50 years, guided by a simple statement her father had passed down to her nearly half a century ago — ". . . only a life of service, is a life worthwhile."The film chronicles her life beginning 99 years ago in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and charts her early childhood, her career as an educator and how she made history as the mayor of Evanston, Illinois where she served for four consecutive terms. The 45-minute documentary was culled from over nine hours of a series of Shorefront directed interview sessions, scanned images from the family collection and multiple resources from local and out of state archives. Shorefront collects, preserves and educates people about Black history on Chicago's suburban North Shore.
