Just as a book is more than its cover, a person is deeper than your first impression. Go deep with someone unlike yourself at the Human Library.
If you've never experienced a Human Library, this is your chance to borrow a "Human Book" for a 30 minute one-on-one conversation designed to foster frank conversations in a safe, positive environment.
“Books” are community members who have volunteered to share their experiences of prejudice and/or discrimination based on race, religion, sexual preference, class, gender identity, disability, or another aspect of their lives. “Readers” and “Books” engage in a dialogue designed to expose people to experiences that are different from their own and to encourage a deeper understanding among members of a community.
Join other community members at the Human Library on the third floor of the Main Library, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on October 6. All are welcome, including kids accompanied by a parent.
While this could change, titles we anticipate to be in attendance include: Sikh Teen, Retired Police Commander, Drag Queen, African American Activist, Blind, Biracial, Transgender, Deaf, Immigrant Who Sought Political Asylum, Gay White Man, Disabled, and Muslim Woman.
The Evanston Public Library is one of the few organizations in Illinois to sponsor a Human Library, which is based on a movement that began in Denmark in 2000, and which now covers six continents and 85 countries. There is a Human Library Chicago and Human Libraries at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Illinois State University. Northeastern Illinois University will host its first Human Library next spring.
