Facilitated by Hive Center For The Book Arts. Ages 12+. Participants will receive a copy of Ross Gay's book of poetry "Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude," while supplies last.
Inspired by Ross Gay’s appreciation for community gardens, community members will learn how to make handmade paper, using plant fibers grown here in Evanston. Evanston plant fibers will be combined in the paper making vats with cotton linter and abaca pulp, and sheets of strong and sustainable paper can be formed into various shapes, not limited to rectangles and squares.
Many of these shaped pieces of paper will be used to create two large collaborative wall hangings; from December through May, community members, library patrons, and Evanston students will join in on stitching, gluing, and attaching various shaped handmade papers together in a collective tapestry, reflecting the variety and diversity of our community.
Hive Center for the Book Arts, founded in 2023, is a place for people to gather, share ideas, and create. The five components of the book arts (writing, paper making, printmaking, book binding, and reading) can be expanded, exploded, and exponentially experimented with to connect humans through learning, making, and sharing.
