This two-part, no-cost, non-credit mini-course with Prof. emer. Joseph L. Schofer will address the construction of the iconic waterway and its contemporary functioning and role in global logistics.
The first lecture on October 10, Engineering the Panama Canal, will identify the strategic, technical, and managerial keys to the successful construction of the canal and extract some lessons for modern megaprojects.
The second session the following week, October 17, is entitled The Panama Canal Today – Just Add Water. It will explore how the canal functions, current operating and pricing policies, its role in global logistics, its competition, and the challenge of water sufficiency.
Your instructor is Joseph L. Schofer, Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering. Professor Schofer received his B.E. in Civil Engineering from Yale University, completing his engineering education (M.S., Ph.D) at Northwestern with a focus on transportation. At Northwestern, he has served as department chair, research center director, and associate dean of engineering. He continues to be engaged in transportation policy analysis as chair of national professional and advisory committees. Recipient of numerous national awards for research and leadership, Schofer has lectured about the Panama Canal and other major infrastructure systems to general audiences for many years. For the past 15 years he has hosted The Infrastructure Show, a monthly podcast explaining and exploring U.S. infrastructure issues.
Registering for this mini-course includes the option to register for both sessions. Although attendance of both sessions is highly recommended, it is not required. Both sessions will be recorded, and the recordings will be made available to all registered participants whether they were able to attend both sessions or not.
Also, there may be a reading assignment for this mini-course, but it, too, is not required.
